About this collection

This digital collection features 198 letters and other documents scanned from the library's Cowan and Denson family papers. The larger manuscript collection contains approximately 920 documents that contain correspondence to and/or from members of these two familes along with receipts, notebooks, scrapbook pages, and other family documents ranging from 1835 to 1903. Of particular interest are the letters about everyday life on a large antebellum plantation and correspondence during the the Civil War.

Transcriptions were compiled by Library staff member Michael Tomaselli and library volunteer Erica Stratton.  When the corona virus necessitated the closure of the library to the public in 2020, a notice was sent out to the community for their assistance in transcribing the letters.  The names of the transcribers appear in a special field.
