Portrait of Joe Wright.
William Dallas "Joe" Wright II (1952-1990) was born in Wilmington on December 25, 1952. Wright was one of the youngest members of the Wilmington 10, all of whom were convicted in a case that made national news in 1972. During the trial, Wright was sentenced at the age of 17 to twenty nine years. He served four and a half years in prison before an appeals court overturned the conviction in 1980. Wright continued to fight for the remainder of his life to have the case expunged from his record. He died on June 13, 1990. The members of the Wilmington 10 were pardoned by Governor Beverly Purdue in 2012.
