Portrait of John H. McRae
John McRae (1806-1883) was a Wilmington Town Commissioner as well as the Magistrate of Police in Wilmington, NC from 1847 through 1855. In 1855, the name of the head of the town government changed from Magistrate to Mayor, making him the first official Mayor. Mr. McRae was one of the incorporators of Oakdale Cemetery, and commanded a regiment from Wilmington in the War with Mexico in 1846. He was part of the welcoming committee for Daniel Webster in 1847, a member of the Thalian Association, and president of the Bank of Wilmington. He is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
