Andrew Harriss (1898-1998) was born in Wilmington, NC. He fought in World War I (with parental consent as he was only 16), and participated in five major engagements during his time overseas. He was employed for 44 years with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. He volunteered for active military duty and was shipped overseas in 1942 in command of a mobile artillery battalion, in which he received many medals for meritorious service. After the war, he served in the Civil Defense Department at the national, state, and local levels. In 1958, he was promoted to brigadier general of the line in the North Carolina National Guard and awarded the North Carolina Distinguished Service Medal. He was awarded the Governor's Volunteer Award in 1980 and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 1998.
