William Joseph Woodward was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina on September 1, 1843. He was a Confederate veteran of the Civil War, a member of the 1st North Carolina Infantry Regiment (also known as the Bethel Regiment), Company H, and discharged as a Colonel. Woodward settled in Wilmington in 1886 and worked for Alexander Sprut & Son, a large cotton exporting firm. At the time of his death, he was the traffic manager for the company's largest shipping interests and secretary of the Champion Compress and Warehouse Company. Woodward died on October 16, 1907, and was buried in his Confederate uniform.
