Portrait of Robert Merritt Kermon.
Robert Meritt Kermon(1893-1976) was born in Acme, North Carolina. He was educated in the public schools of Wilmington and also attended Alderman Private School. Kermon worked as quartermaster of a steamer and as an electrician before joining the war effort as a special recruiting officer. In 1919 he was appointed meter inspector for New Hanover County and in that same year he opened Union Bath House in Wrightsville Beach. Kermon leased and operated Carolina Beach resort in 1924 and also managed the Academy of Music (now Thalian Hall) for a period of time. He then went on to attend law school and was admitted to the bar in 1927. Kermon was elected to the state legislature in 1943 and 1947 and was very active in school legislation. In addition to his career, he was involved in a variety of civic and fraternal activities in Wilmington. Kermon is buried in Bellevue cemetery.
