At
eleven
stories
, the
Murchison-First
Union
Building
is
the
tallest
structure
in
Wilmington
.
Built
1913-1914
,
Wilmington
native
,
Kenneth
M
.
Murchison
(1872-1938)
of
New
York
, was the
architect
for the
Neoclassical
Revival
building
,
which
originally
was the
site
of the
Murchison
Bank
on the
first
floor
. The
offices
of a
number
of
doctors
,
dentists
and a
variety
of
businesses
occupied
the
upper
stories
. For a
number
of
years
, the
offices
and
plant
of the
Wilmington
Star-News
was
located
on the
west
end
of the
ground
floor
. In
1972
, the
First
Union
Bank
moved
into the
ground
floor
and the
building
was
renamed
. The
side
of the
Murchison
National
Bank
Building-Acme
Building
on the
northeast
corner
of
Front
and
Chestnut
streets
,
is
in the
foreground
.
