This image is a portrait of Hugh Waddell.
William Hugh Waddell was born on March 21, 1799 in Bladen county, North Carolina. He was the son of John W. and Sarah Nash Waddell and the grandson of General Hugh Waddell, a colonial military officer. Waddell attended the University of North Carolina where he studied law and graduated in 1818. He started a law practice in Hillsborough in 1823, becoming well known in the area for his excellence in the field. Waddell was elected to the House of Commons for Orange County in 1828 and served another session in 1835. He was then elected to the senate, representing the state of North Carolina, where he served for five sessions of congress. Waddell maintained his law practice until 1867 when he moved to Wilmington to live with his son, Alfred Moore Waddell.
